PENANG – Penang plans to dissolve its state assembly on June 28 to pave way for the state elections.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said that he will meet with Penang state president Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak in the near future to seek approval for the dissolution of the state assembly, Bernama reported.
Chow, who is also the Penang Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman, said that the seat allocation process between PH and Barisan Nasional (BN) in the state is nearly 95% complete.
“We will now handle any PH-BN negotiations at the national level, and the final decision will be made at that level...we anticipate further meetings in the future,” he told a press conference.
Previously, Chow said that the negotiations, which have been ongoing since last month, have progressed well.
However, there are still some seats that remain undecided due to overlapping claims.
Penang has 40 state assembly seats.
In the 14th general election (GE14), PH secured 37 seats, including two won by Bersatu candidates who were aligned with PH at the time.
BN and PAS won two and one seat(s), respectively.
In GE15, the state assemblies of Kedah, Penang, Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Kelantan, and Terengganu did not dissolve.
However, media reports previously indicated that leaders from these six states agreed that the most suitable time for dissolution would be during the last two weeks of June to allow for simultaneous state elections. – The Vibes, June 8, 2023
