KOTA KINABALU – Former Sabah attorney-general Tan Sri Herman Luping died yesterday, aged 83.

State Tourism, Culture and Environment Assistant Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai announced the death on Facebook.

Joniston said he and several other Parti Bersatu Sabah leaders had visited Luping at the latter’s home in Kg Likas yesterday morning, before his death.

Luping was a prominent figure among the Kadazandusun community. He was part of the royal commission of inquiry initiated in 2012 to investigate Sabah’s illegal immigrant issue.

The former lawyer had authored several books on the state’s politics and culture, including Sabah’s Dilemma, Indigenous Ethnic Communities of Sabah: The Kadazandusun, Kadazan Tales & Legends of Penampang District, and Pangazou.

Former chief minister Tan Sri Musa Aman conveyed his condolences to Luping’s family in a Facebook post today.

“He did his service to the state as deputy chief minister, and was a committed and influential political figure in his early days. Tan Sri was loyal to his friends, and he will be dearly missed.”
