KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim suggested the upcoming elections in six states will take place in August.
During an event in Nilai, Negri Sembilan yesterday evening, Anwar, who also serves as the chairman of Pakatan Harapan (PH), hinted at the likelihood of the state polls taking place in that month.
“I am seeking the support of our friends as the election will be held here in August,” he said, as quoted by the New Straits Times.
Among the three states under PH set to hold state polls this year, Penang and Negri Sembilan have announced their plans to dissolve their state assemblies on June 28 and 30, respectively. Additionally, Selangor, another PH-governed state, has already dissolved its state assembly last Friday.
Furthermore, three states governed by Perikatan Nasional will also hold state polls this year. Kelantan has already dissolved its state assembly, while Kedah is set to do so on June 28. Terengganu is yet to announce its dissolution date.
The Election Commission (EC) is required to set a polling date within 60 days of the dissolution of the state assemblies.
At the event, Anwar also urged voters to continue placing their trust in PH and other members of the unity government.
“In Negri Sembilan, we have a diverse population comprising Malays, Indians, and Chinese. If someone thinks they can campaign solely for Indians or Malays, they are mistaken,” Anwar said.
Addressing the speculation about a potential change in state government, Anwar said, “If there are people waiting for the chance to take over the state government, let them wait. If we want to protect and develop this state for all its people, voters must support PH and the unity government.”
He also claimed that the unity government’s continued rule over Negri Sembilan would enable greater assistance, benefits, and development for the people. – The Vibes, June 25, 2023
