MIRI – Violent storms have left a trail of havoc in different parts of Sarawak, with strong winds and serious floods reported.
Saratok district in central Sarawak was battered by winds early today, ripping off roofs and walls of houses in Kg Tengah Beladin.
The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department said the Saratok Fire and Rescue Station had at 6.30am responded to an emergency call from the Kg Tengah Beladin villagers.
“Storms brought violent winds that damaged at least 12 houses in Kg Tengah Beladin.
“Roofs were blown off and wooden walls torn apart by the force of the wind. So far, no one has been injured.
“Help for the victims is being arranged,” the department said in a press statement.
Several dozen people made homeless are taking temporary shelter with neighbours.
In northern Sarawak, there are floods in three districts of Subis, Marudi and Telang Usan.
Numerous populated localities such as Suai, Tinjar, Long Bemang, Long Panai and others are under about a metre of water, said the department.
The worst affected longhouses are Long Bemang and Long Panai, both of which house about a thousand people.
SK Long Bemang and Klinik Long Bemang are also flooded, but fortunately, there are no major evacuations being carried out yet.
