GEORGE TOWN – DAP plans to initiate a meticulously targeted campaigning process with the aim of wresting support from fence-sitters in the upcoming Penang state election.
State DAP chief Chow Kon Yeow said that the party will kick off its campaign with a series of small-scale ceramah in specific neighbourhoods.
He referred to this as “kelompok” campaigning (‘kelompok’ means small gathering in Malay), but stressed that the party will also hold occasional large-scale rallies attended by national leaders and members of the federal cabinet.
The focus of the targeted campaign is to address voters more intimately, and to directly explain the party’s performance in ruling the state since 2008.
The caretaker chief minister said the voters need to be impressed on why the party needs another mandate to ensure continuity in the efforts to make Penang prosperous for all.
Speaking at a press conference after nominations today, Chow said that DAP is now going into full gear after 19 of its candidates were successfully confirmed as candidates for Pakatan Harapan (PH).
PH is working in alliance with Barisan Nasional (BN) in the leadup to early voting on August 8 and the main polling day on August 12.
Of the 40 constituencies, two will see a four-cornered fight while seven will have three-cornered battles.
Chow, who is defending his Padang Kota seat, faces only one challenger.
Despite the stiff onslaught from Perikatan Nasional and others, Chow is confident that DAP will replicate its electoral successes since 2008.
Meanwhile in Kedah, caretaker menteri besar Datuk Seri Muhammed Sanusi Md Nor unveiled over 25 points on what he has achieved since helming the state in 2020.
Sanusi, who is PN elections director and state PAS deputy commissioner, highlighted, among other things, that he had brought in RM91.4 billion worth of investments since 2020 until the first quarter of this year.
It is the highest ever investment figure earned by a Kedah menteri besar since independence, he said.
He also reduced the debt of state water concessionaire Syarikat Air Darul Aman to just RM6.7 million from a high of RM148 million in 2020, he added. – The Vibes, July 29, 2023
