KUALA LUMPUR – The frontman for American rock band Blink-182, Tom DeLonge, took a swipe at Malaysia in an Instagram post recently.
Delonge and The 1975 lead singer Matty Healy met at Lollapalooza, currently happening at Grant Park in Chicago, and the two exchanged a kiss, which was captured on video.
At the time, Healy was performing on stage when he noticed DeLonge in the photo pit.
Healy hopped down from the stage to meet DeLonge, whom he later described to the audience as the “person who inspired him to talk about his d*** as much”.
The two exchanged a hug and a kiss and Healy said to DeLonge “I love you so much” while still holding his microphone and a cigarette.
DeLonge later took a screengrab from a video of their kiss and shared it on his Instagram, with the caption: “I guess myself AND The 1975 won’t be going to Malaysia – just a couple dudes kissing during their phenomenal set at Lollapalooza”.
This is an apparent dig at the controversy Healy created when he was in Malaysia two weeks ago for the Good Vibes Festival (GVF).
While DeLonge’s post has only garnered over 1,400 comments over the past 12 hours, several Malaysians who came across the post have left their mark, with one user saying: “Do we care. Mak kau ijau”.
In the world of social media comments, “mak kau hijau” has become the unofficial “Malaysians are here” stamp.
Healy and the GVF fiasco
During his performance at GVF in Sepang on July 21, Healy became disruptive and destroyed a drone while on stage.
He also went on a rant about the Malaysian government and its anti-LGBT laws.
Healy then kissed male bandmate Ross MacDonald on stage.
The organisers then pulled the plug on the band’s performance. Healy and his bandmates flew out of Kuala Lumpur just a few hours later.
The 1975 have since been banned from ever performing in Malaysia again. The band proceeded to cancel their subsequently planned stints in Jakarta and Taipei.
Meanwhile, Healy, during his Lollapalooza performance seemingly took a jab at his GVF controversy, saying to the crowd: “You want my travel tip? Don’t go to…”
He did not finish his sentence as the band cut him off by starting their next song.
This is apparently the band’s signature gimmick, where Healy would ramble and the band would cut him off before he says something controversial. – The VIbes, August 6, 2023
