PETALING JAYA – Malaysia’s favourite condiment, the chilli sauce, has been heating up Facebook over the past few days.
It all started when a Facebook user shared a receipt where he said he had to pay RM10.60 for 10 extra packets of chilli sauce at a McDonald’s outlet in Taman Buaya, Melaka.
Saiful Adly Abd Wahab’s post has garnered over 1,000 comments since it was published.
Many were shocked, as it is understood that the packets of chilli sauce are given to patrons for free when buying food from McDonald’s.
There were those who were sceptical, as the receipt shared by Saiful was strictly for the purchase of 10 packets of chilli sauce and nothing else.
This led to people accusing him of only purchasing the sauce without buying any food items.
In another post to explain the matter, Saiful said that he had already purchased food from McDonald’s but later wanted extra chilli sauce.
He said since he ordered four burgers, two wraps and four fries, he felt it was normal to ask for an extra 10 packets of chilli sauce. However, he claimed he was told he had to pay for it.
At a charge of RM1 per packet, he paid RM10.60 including tax and insisted on a receipt.
Today, upon the completion of an internal investigation, McDonald's issued a statement to explain their side of the story.
“After conducting an internal investigation and reviewing CCTV footage, we discovered that there was an initial oversight on our part where the customer was unintentionally provided with an insufficient amount of chilli sauce.
“Our staff then promptly provided additional packets of chilli sauce when requested by the customer.
“However, at that point, the customer became extremely irate and verbally aggressive toward our staff.
“The customer insisted on paying for an additional 10 packets of chilli sauce and urged our crew to issue a receipt for this purchase.
“Despite our crew’s attempts to clarify that chilli sauce is provided free of charge, the customer angrily insisted on being charged for the 10 packets,” the fast food chain said.
“We have reported this incident to police to ensure the safety of our crew in light of the customer’s aggressive behaviour.
“We would like to reiterate that McDonald’s Malaysia offers all our customers chilli sauce at no additional cost.”
To add to the confusion, the Melaka branch of the Domestic Trade and Costs of Living Ministry posted a video saying “action has been taken against the premises in question” without furnishing any details, except that it was in connection with the viral chilli sauce issue. – The Vibes, September 26, 2023
