KUALA LUMPUR – The Minister of Youth and Sports has pledged to fully cooperate with the authorities and look into the sexual assault allegation made by a former male national swimmer, who had recently lodged a police report towards the perpetrator.
“I believe a police report has been lodged by the former athlete regarding this matter and I can assure all parties that my ministry and I will fully cooperate and assist the authorities in regard to this investigation,” said minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu, responding to The Vibes report this morning.
In a WhatsApp message, Faizal said that he is committed to create a safe environment for the children and athletes, adding that the best way to achieve this is through strong legislation.
“My officers have already been tasked to work on developing a Safe Sport Act, and this is something that needs to be expedited by taking into concern the safety and welfare of all stakeholders.
“I would like to give my assurances that my ministry will always be open to engagement on these matters,” he said.
However, Faizal said that he will not be able to table the Safe Sport Act in the next parliament seating but is targeting to get this sorted by this year.
“I am really serious about getting the Safe Sport Act implemented because I want those involved in the sports industry to feel safe and focus on their performance and achievements.
Meanwhile, it is understood that the perpetrator is the same person who harassed Cindy Ong when she was representing the country many years ago.
Last year, Cindy opened a can of worms after bringing her story of sexual harassment to light, which has led to similar revelations by other athletes such as diving queen Datuk Pandelela Rinong and former national bowler Syaidatul Afifah Badrul Hamidi. – The Vibes, January 21, 2022
