JOHOR – Luciano Figueroa became the first Johor Darul Ta’zim Football Club (JDT FC) player to be named at a section of the seating area at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in honour of the former player.

Now known as the Luciano Figueroa Stand, it is to recognize the player’s significant contributions to the club.

“Today, we recognise the contribution of our former player and current manager Luciano Figueroa,” Tunku Mahkota of Johor Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, who is the club owner said in a statement.

“He won multiple trophies, including the historic moment of being the first East Asian side to win the AFC Cup. His name will forever be imprinted in this stadium.

“JDT are a club that always recognize those that have contributed to Johor football, past, present and future. We have always appreciated players, coaches and staff who have served and created history with JDT.”

The stand was officiated by Tunku Ismail at the stadium, which was also attended by Argentinian Ambassador to Malaysia, Manuel Balaguer Salas.

Figueroa enjoyed an illustrious career with the Southern Tigers since joining in 2014, scoring 43 goals and providing 14 assists in 71 games, before retiring in 2018.

The former Argentine international also won two Super League titles, the 2015 Charity Shield and 2015 AFC Cup in his first spell, before returning as club ambassador in 2017.

He donned the red and blue jersey once more in 2018 to lift his second Charity Shield and third Super League title.

He was named JDT manager in August 2018 and has guided the Southern Tigers to two Charity Shields (2019 & 2020), 2019 Super League title and 2019 Malaysia Cup title. – Football Tribe, September 23, 2020
