TENOM – A protest broke out here forcing authorities to use tear gas to disperse political supporters after Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat (KDM) president Datuk Peter Anthony’s nomination was refused here earlier.
A party spokesman told The Vibes that the Election Commission (EC) had been advised not to accept Anthony’s nomination.
“We have been informed that the legal adviser to the EC has instructed the commission not to accept his nomination.
“But we are still negotiating. The party is waiting for the EC's announcement.”
Nomination was closed at 10am today.
EC’s refusal is believed to have triggered the protest among Anthony’s supporters during the nomination period.
A couple of videos of the protest had since gone viral, with one showing Anthony calling his followers to rush into a building here.
The Vibes is waiting on an official comment.
Last May, former Sabah infrastructure development minister Anthony was found guilty of forging a letter in 2014 from the office of the Universiti Malaysia Sabah deputy vice-chancellor for a system maintenance contract work.
Anthony, who is the Melalap assemblyman, was sentenced to three years in jail and a fine of RM50,000. However, he managed to obtain a stay of execution. – The Vibes, November 5, 2022
