GROWING up in a Utah suburb, Tyler Robinson seemed to be on a promising path: he had a close-knit family, scored well on standardised tests, and earned a 4.0 GPA, according to social media posts.
Robinson’s arrest Friday after a days-long manhunt shocked his community and family.
Robinson was taken into custody on 12 September after a family member recognised him in surveillance images, a development investigators described as pivotal in ending a nationwide manhunt.
That family member was apparently Robinson's father, who encouraged him to turn himself in, the BBC's US partner CBS News has reported, citing two law enforcement sources. The father then reportedly contacted a family friend who informed the sheriff's office.
“Tyler, is this you? This looks like you,” he asked the 22-year-old, a law enforcement official briefed on the investigation told CNN. His son acknowledged that it was him, the source said, and when his father urged him to turn himself in, suggested that he would rather kill himself.
But after his father convinced him to talk with a youth pastor, the source said, Robinson agreed to be taken into custody.
Squeaky clean
His grandmother, Debbie Robinson, who spoke with NBC News before her grandson’s name was made public, said she talks to her family every day and was not aware that her 22-year-old grandson, who she described as “squeaky clean,” had attended the event at Utah Valley University where Kirk was killed.
Robinson, an electrical apprentice, had developed a recent interest in politics, officials said. People in his community near St. George in conservative Southern Utah said that wasn’t typical of his family.
After graduating high school in 2021, he filmed a video proudly reciting a letter from Utah State University offering him a four-year merit scholarship.
But Robinson left the state school after just a semester, taking a leave of absence and never returning.
Now, authorities are working to understand what happened in the intervening years that led Robinson to the rooftop where he allegedly gunned down conservative activist Charlie Kirk this week.
Officials have not yet identified a precise motive for the shooting, though they offered some clues on Friday morning in announcing his arrest.
More political
Utah Governor Spencer Cox told reporters that a family member interviewed by law enforcement said Robinson had recently mentioned Kirk's scheduled appearance at Utah Valley University, where he was shot.
He said a family member interviewed by investigators stated that Robinson had become "more political" in recent years.
"They talked about why they didn't like him and the viewpoints that he had," Cox said referring to the conversation.
Robinson, now 22, was arrested for aggravated murder and other charges. He has no criminal history, according to state records reviewed by Reuters.
Student at Dixie Technical College
In a statement, the Utah Board of Higher Education said Tyler James Robinson was a third-year student in the electrical apprenticeship programme at Dixie Technical College.
"He previously spent one semester at Utah State University in 2021 and earned concurrent enrolment credits through Utah Tech University while in high school between 2019 and 2021," it added.
Social media accounts indicate Robinson's father runs a kitchen countertop and cabinet installation business, while his mother is a social worker. The family is Mormon and active in the local church.
One neighbor, Kristin Schwiermann, described working as a custodian at Robinson's elementary school and said she knew him and his family from church. Schwiermann, 66, said he was “very considerate,” “quiet” and “respectful.”
“He was a good kid,” she said.
A public safety assessment report shows that Robinson had no felony or misdemeanor convictions and no prior violent offenses.
Public records indicate that Robinson’s last voter registration date was July 13, 2021, and his political party is none declared.
Online culture
Investigators say Robinson was steeped in online culture, pointing to inscriptions on shell casings linked to the case.
A former classmate described Robinson as being “very, very big into gaming” and interested in video game design. Robinson and his friends “would spend their lunches playing the card games and all that kind of stuff,” he said.
Two casings displayed apparent references to online trolling humour. The inscription "notices bulges OwO what's this?" on a fired shell casing may refer to a "copypasta" - a piece of text that is repeated over and over again, often to troll people online.
Another casing, that was unfired, was inscribed with the words "If you read this, you are gay lmao" - again an apparent reference to a trolling joke.
Meanwhile, other casings could be interpreted as sympathetic to Antifa, or the anti-fascist movement, a loose collection of far-left activists who have been active in the US over the last decade and often demonstrate against Trump policies and far-right groups.
One unfired casing had the words "Hey fascist! Catch!" and an up, right and three down arrows.
Now, people who knew Robinson are struggling to reconcile their image of him with the allegations laid out by police.
