IRANIAN Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has urged the United Nations to fulfil its legal responsibility to condemn what he terms the unprovoked military actions of the United States and Israel against Iran, citing threats to regional stability and violations of international law.
During a telephone conversation on Monday evening with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Araghchi discussed the latest developments in the Middle East, particularly the impact of US-Israeli military interventions in Iranian territory.
Describing the incursions as a blatant breach of international law and the UN Charter, the Iranian minister stressed that the UN and its Secretary-General are legally obliged to “condemn these aggressions unequivocally and clearly” and to ensure that the perpetrators are held accountable under Chapter 7 of the UN Charter.
Bernama-MNA reported that Araghchi further urging the international community to recognise the root cause of instability in the region and the strategic Hormuz Strait, attributing navigational disruptions there to the ongoing US-Israel campaign.
He emphasised that the situation in the Strait cannot be addressed without a comprehensive understanding of the broader regional context.
“All nations and international institutions committed to peace and security must responsibly denounce the crimes of the US and Israel and demand an end to military aggression against Iran,” Araghchi said.
He also condemned what he described as Israel’s brutal attacks on Lebanon, which have resulted in hundreds of casualties, warning that international indifference to Israeli violations in Palestine and other regional states risks further expansion of Israeli aggression and heightened instability globally.
Secretary-General Guterres, in turn, shared his assessment of the situation across the Persian Gulf, the wider Middle East, and maritime security challenges, underscoring the international community’s ongoing concern over escalating tensions.
This exchange highlights Tehran’s insistence on UN accountability and its call for immediate global condemnation of actions it views as destabilising and unlawful. - March 18, 2026
