IRANIAN Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is scheduled to visit Oman today for discussions centred on the Strait of Hormuz and maritime security, according to Iranian state media, as Tehran seeks to advance diplomatic efforts over the strategically vital waterway.

The official IRNA news agency, citing Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei, said the visit would focus on navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and broader issues relating to maritime security.

"This visit will focus on the Strait of Hormuz and maritime security," Baghaei said.

He added that the discussions would build on diplomatic engagements initiated between Tehran and Muscat over the past one to two months.

"It is a continuation of the negotiations that we began with Oman over the past one or two months," he said.

The Strait of Hormuz has emerged as one of the principal points of contention between Tehran and Washington after Iran closed the strategic waterway in response to the conflict launched by the United States and Israel in late February.

Although a ceasefire agreement reached on 8 April brought an end to large-scale hostilities, sporadic incidents have continued, many of them linked to disputes over access to the crucial maritime passage.

AFP cited that Tehran maintains that it should exercise control over the strategic route, which carries around one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments, and has expressed its intention to impose charges on vessels transiting the strait.

Before the conflict, Iran did not exercise such authority. While the Strait of Hormuz lies within the territorial waters of both Iran and Oman, international maritime law generally does not permit either country to block transit or levy tolls on vessels exercising the right of passage through the waterway. - July 11, 2026
