ONE of the nation's oldest biscuit producers - Ghee Hiang scored another milestone as it began working with two public institutions to produce sesame oil as a health supplement.
Sesame oil has been the active secret ingredient in the array of paste biscuits which Ghee Hiang produces for the past 169-years - a recipe from Fujian, China.
In Penang, the company has been producing a wide array of biscuits and cookies while it also managed to gain halal certification a few years back.
Recently, the company which has also forayed into food and beverage outlets, property and publications, signed a memorandum of understanding and agreement with the Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) and apex institution - Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).
Its executive director Datuk Ch’ng Huck Theng said that the collaboration with the academia is a step in reinforcing the brand's need for safety and quality.
Sesame oil is applied the wrong way is not healthy, hence with the partnership of UniKL and USM, there is science behind the delivery of the sesame oil.
"Ghee Hiang wants to support science, education and well - being so we want our cooking ingredient to be tested for its nutritional value," said Ch’ng.
