SARAWAK assembly Speaker Tan Sri Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar became the highest ranking leader in Sarawak to publicly assert that the state considers itself as a region in Malaysia, not just a state.

Speaking at a gathering at the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) headquarters in Kuching, he said Sarawak has a status higher than any state in the country.

“Malaysia was formed in 1963 by the unification of Malaya, Sarawak, Sabah and Singapore.

“All these are regions which came together to become one country.

“It is high time that we in Sarawak drop the term ‘state’ and our legislative assembly be called Sarawak legislative assembly to signify our status as a region,” he said.

On whether a motion will be tabled officially to drop the term “state” from the Sarawak state legislative assembly, Asfia said he will let the assembly decide.

“The assembly sitting will be starting (May 6 tomorrow).

“The elected representatives will decide accordingly based on their wisdom,” he said.

On April 26, The Vibes reported that Sarawak is set to assert itself in a more pronounced and public manner that it has a status of much higher standing than just a state in Malaysia.
