THE umbrella body representing thousands of lorry-cargo transporters in Sarawak has appealed to Putrajaya not to cut fuel subsidies in the Borneo states.
Federation of Sarawak Lorry Transporters Association president Ling Kah Kiong said his organisation was also making the appeal on behalf of Sabah.
"If the federal government insists on going ahead with fuel subsidy cut, do it first in the peninsula,” he said.
"Spare Sarawak and Sabah for now as the business people and ordinary folk of Sarawak and Sabah… We are already struggling to sustain ourselves with the constant increase in costs and service charges.
"We are not in a position to shoulder extra financial burdens that will arise from fuel subsidies cut that will cause spiralling increase in prices across the board," he said in a statement.
Ling said Sabah and Sarawak are socio-economically behind the peninsula states
He called on Putrajaya to talk the the business communities of Sarawak and Sabah.
A Gabungan Parti Sarawak assemblyman has also urged the federal government to reconsider cutting subsidies for RON95 and diesel fuel.
Telang Usan representative Dennis Ngau said the one million people in rural Sarawak are already struggling to make ends meet. – May 17, 2024.
