GABUNGAN Parti Sarawak leaders in the state have acknowledged that the rural-urban divide is still huge in Sarawak.
Deputy premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah however, said the problem is being tackled and various measures were already in place.
Speaking at a pre-Gawai gathering in Lundu town near Kuching, he said Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg is aware of the need to reduce the divide.
"We are giving top priority to bridge the divide between rural and urban Sarawak.
"The development plans devised are aimed towards bridging this big divide and a lot of effort is needed," he said.
Uggah said it is good to note that the local ethnic communities are supportive of the government in this aspect.
On May 19, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had spoken about the need to do more to help rural Sarawakians.
During a pre-Gawai dinner organised by Parti Rakyat Sarawak in Sibu town, Zahid said there are still populations in rural districts without electricity and water and telecommunication coverage in Sarawak.
Zahid also noted the bad roads and broken bridges dotting rural Sarawak.
He promised to get his Rural and Regional Development Ministry to help the Works Ministry to help rural Sarawakians. - The Vibes, May 23, 2024
