PROLONGED downpours last night and in the early hours of the morning have caused widespread floods across several constituencies in central Sarawak.

Pakan, Bawang Assan, Kapit, and several locations near Sibu were among the most severely affected areas.

In some parts of Kapit, floodwaters were reported to have rosin more than three metres.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department said SK Nanga Kebiaw in Kapit and SJK Cina Hang Kwong in Pakan were inundated.

"We have evacuated teachers and students from the flooded schools and taken them to safety. We have also evacuated residents from several longhouses after floodwaters entered their homes," the fire department stated.

Rising waters have cut off many roads, and rescue teams have deployed boats to reach these locations, the department added. – August 23, 2024.
