SARAWAK police rescued two Indonesian women who were locked up in a house for the past 13 years and forced to work without pay.
The rescue of the middle-aged women took place in a residential estate in Kuching over the weekend after police raided the house following intensive surveillance.
Sarawak CID chief Wong Ing Fung was speaking to reporters during a police-community event in Sibu town today.
"We are investigating this case as human trafficking for forced labour. Human trafficking has become a big problem in Sarawak and foreigners are being smuggled in and forced to work.
"In the case of the two Indonesian women we rescued in Kuching, they were brought into the state with the promise of being paid RM600 monthly.
"However, they ended up being locked up for the past 13 years and forced to work without any pay," said Wong.
The employer is under remand for further investigation while the women have been taken into safe custody pending action against their abuser.
He also called on the public to help alert the nearest police if they know of any cases of forced labour. - October 14, 2024
