NETIZENS were surprised to learn recently that Malaysia has an RM600 banknote - issued in conjunction with the 60th Anniversary of the Signing of the Federation of Malaya Independence Agreement.

In a recent TikTok video by @banknoteworld, the three largest banknotes in the world were revealed - all commemorative editions with the RM600 earning the title of the largest banknote in the world.

The note measures 370mm by 220mm and has higher security features.

According to Bank Negara Malaysia’s website, these commemorative banknotes were launched by His Majesty Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong XV Sultan Muhammad V at the Museum and Art Gallery, Sasana Kijang, Bank Negara Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur.

The banknote has a face value of RM600 and was sold for RM1,700 a piece and issued in honour of the contributions by the Council (later called Conference) of Rulers towards realising the nation's independence on Aug 31, 1957.

The obverse side of the RM600 and RM60 notes shows 15 different monarchs and heads of state circling the royal throne.

The reverse side portrays the nine rulers signing the Federation of Malaya Independence Agreement, the silhouette of the first prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, and the four significant landmarks in the country -  the National Palace, Perdana Putra, the Parliament building, and the Palace of Justice.

The third largest note went to Fiji’s $2,000 and the second largest note went to the Philippines’ peso 100,000.

The RM600 banknote also made its way into the Guinness Book of Records and the record has been held by Malaysia since December 2017. - November 28, 2024
