THE government has decided to give motorists a 50 per cent toll discount in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebrations.

Works Minister, Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the discount will take effect from 12.01 am on Jan 27 and will end at 11.59 pm on Jan 28.

"This would cost the government about RM20.08 million in compensation to the toll concessionaires.

"The discount only applies to Class 1 private vehicles and not to tolls at the country’s borders, namely the Sultan Iskandar Building and Tanjung Kupang toll plazas," he said.

On Tuesday, Linggi said the government had decided to stop providing toll exemptions during the festive season as implemented previously.

He said the matter was decided in a Cabinet meeting last year.

However, he said, the government will replace the free toll privilege with a more targeted approach.

He did not provide details of the targeted approach. - January 24, 2025
