SARAWAK is exploring the establishment of an Aerospace Industrial Park to solidify its position as a key hub for the production of high-value aerospace components and as a research center in the aerospace industry.
Premier of Sarawak, Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, revealed that the proposed industrial park is expected to attract significant investments in aerospace manufacturing to the state and encourage further collaboration within the sector.
“The aerospace sector is rapidly growing across ASEAN, and Sarawak is prepared to become a central player in this high-impact industry. The state is strategically located and committed to leveraging cutting-edge technology and innovation,” Abang Johari said in his speech at the ASEAN Business and Economic Forum 2025 held in the state today.
The Premier highlighted that the plans to develop an aerospace manufacturing and maintenance ecosystem have already led to investments in the production of high-value components, aircraft maintenance, and research into sustainable aviation fuel.
These developments, he noted, are positioning Sarawak as a leading force in the region's aerospace sector.
In addition to the Aerospace Industrial Park, Abang Johari pointed to the upcoming establishment of an Aerospace Academy at the Sarawak Centre of Excellence Technology (CENTEXS).
The academy will serve as a key driver in training Sarawak’s workforce in aerospace engineering, drone technology, and satellite manufacturing to meet future industry demands.
Furthermore, the Premier announced that the launch of AirBorneo, the state-owned airline, is set to revolutionize air connectivity within ASEAN.
“As a Sarawak-based airline, AirBorneo will strengthen regional routes, improve international access, and open new opportunities within the tourism, trade, and logistics sectors. Sarawak is not only part of the ASEAN airspace, but it is also poised to shape it,” he added.
On February 12, 2025, the Sarawak State Government finalized the acquisition of MASWings through the signing of a sale and purchase agreement with Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG).
Following the acquisition, MASWings has been rebranded as AirBorneo. - February 28, 2025
