ASTRO Audio has pledged full cooperation with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) regarding its ongoing investigation into controversial content uploaded on the social media accounts of ERA radio station.

The company, in a statement released today, affirmed its commitment to addressing the issue following the viral video that involved three ERA radio presenters mocking a religious ceremony.

Astro Audio acknowledged the statement issued by MCMC and confirmed that it would respond to the Notice of Intent to Suspend its license within the specified deadline.

"We have taken note of the Notice of Intent to Suspend the License and will submit an official response within the specified time period," the statement read.

"We view this matter seriously and are committed to complying with all relevant regulations," Astro Audio added.

While addressing the incident, Astro Audio expressed its regret over the situation and the inconvenience it has caused to the public.

The company assured that it would take necessary actions to prevent such occurrences in the future, underlining its commitment to maintaining high standards of content.

The controversy came to light on March 4 when the Communications Minister, Fahmi Fadzil, instructed MCMC to investigate the viral video, which featured the three radio hosts mocking a religious ceremony.

Following this directive, MCMC issued a statement confirming that Astro's senior management had been summoned to assist in the investigation under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

This action follows amendments to the Act, which address issues surrounding online content and its impact on the community.

The viral video, which featured the three radio hosts mocking a religious ceremony had triggered public concerns and the need for content shared to adhere to appropriate standards and sensitivities.

Astro Audio’s cooperation with the MCMC’s investigation is seen as a crucial step in addressing public concerns and ensuring that content shared by media organisations adheres to appropriate standards and sensitivities.

The outcome of the investigation is awaited as MCMC continues to probe the matter. – March 6, 2025
