THE Sarawak Disaster Management Committee has shot down claims that there has been a dangerous overflow of water from the 210-metre high Bakun Dam that is causing floodings throughout central Sarawak.

Committee chairman Datuk Amar Dougglas Uggah said the water-level in the Sungai Rajang is still at worrying levels but that is not due to dangerous discharge of water from Bakun Dam which is linked to the Sungai Rajang.

"It is not true that water discharge from Bakun Dam is at dangerous rate. The water in Bakun is still at safe level.

"The water level of Sungai Rajang downstream area is still at worrying levels but it is not due to Bakun Dam water.

"The floods in (districts of) Sibu, Song, Kapit, Kanowit came suddenly due to the heavy rain," he said after visiting an emergency evacuation centre in central Sarawak.

Uggah called on residents to be ready to evacuate as the floods continue to remain high in central Sarawak.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department said latest ground reports showed more evacuations of flood victims in central districts of Sibu, Selangau, Kapit and Song.

The latest session of heavy rain and floods in Sarawak started three days ago. - March 23, 2025
