THE principal of Foon Yew High School in Kulai has stepped down after students were allegedly involved in using artificial intelligence to create and sell fake nude images of women online.
In a statement released today, the school’s board of directors confirmed they received a resignation letter from Principal Gan Chuang Chee on April 12.
“The board takes this issue very seriously, and during our monthly meeting on April 17, we unanimously agreed to honour Gan’s decision,” they stated.
The board also mentioned, without going into details, that “complaints from alumni will be referred to an independent five-member committee.”
Earlier this month, it was reported that a male student from a Chinese school in Kulai, Johor, allegedly stole photos of his female classmates, manipulated them using AI to create explicit images and videos, and then sold them online.
There are at least 30 to 40 victims, some of whom are unaware that their images have been altered. Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching noted that some victims are former students, while current students are as young as 14.
"This incident is a grave violation of personal privacy and dignity, and it could lead to psychological trauma for the victims," she stated.
Johor Police Chief Datuk M Kumar reported that a 16-year-old suspect was apprehended by the Commercial Crime Investigation Division at the Kulai District Police Headquarters after an 18-year-old girl filed a report on April 3, claiming that edited pornographic images featuring her face were being shared on social media.
The school’s board clarified on April 10 that the alleged offender had been expelled but admitted they did not respond to the complaints quickly enough. – April 18, 2025
