A PROJECT manager of a prominent construction company who was arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for corruption in the procurement of a data centre construction project tender tried to burn almost RM1 million cash when his house in Petaling Jaya was raided.
According to sources, during the MACC raid on Thursday, the team of officers found partially burnt RM100 banknotes totaling almost RM1 million.
The suspect is believed to have taken several bundles of cash and tried to dispose of them by burning them after realising the presence of the MACC officers.
"After the door of the house was successfully opened, the MACC team that conducted the raid found the house filled with thick smoke emanating from a bathroom.
"Following an inspection carried out in the bathroom, officers found RM100 banknotes totaling about RM1 million that had been burned," he said.
After a thorough inspection of the suspect's house, MACC then found approximately RM7.5 million in cash stored in several pillow boxes, three Rolex, Omega and Cartier watches as well as jewellery such as rings and gold coins.
All the items were then seized by MACC for further investigations.
Meanwhile, MACC Deputy Chief Commissioner (Operations), Datuk Seri Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya when contacted confirmed the suspect's actions in burning the banknotes and stressed that trying to dispose of evidence is a serious offence punishable under section 201 of the Penal Code and carries a prison sentence of up to seven years or a fine.
However, he said that the main focus of the investigation into this case is under sections 16 and 17A of the MACC Act 2009. - July 19, 2025
