A SEVEN-year-old girl has died after being stung by a box jellyfish at Pantai Sawangan, Kuala Penyu in Kota Kinabalu.
Beaufort District Police Chief Superintendent Wong Leong Ming said the victim is said to have collapsed as soon as she came out of the water and an investigation paper has since been opened.
“An autopsy was conducted from 11.30am to 1pm today at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
“The results of the examination by the doctor found that the cause of death was ‘jellyfish envenomation’, which is poisoning due to a jellyfish sting,” he said as reported by Harian Metro.
Meanwhile, a doctor who specializes in jellyfish sting poisoning cases shared several steps if stung by the poisonous species.
“Stay calm and pour vinegar onto the area affected by the sting and leave it for 30 seconds before removing any tentacles attached to the skin using tweezers or a cloth.
“Reduce movement of the stung part of the body and immediately take the victim to hospital.”
If the victim is unconscious, call 999 and perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) immediately. - August 21, 2025
