A 32-YEAR-OLD man allegedly assaulted his elderly father with a cane and knife before setting the family home on fire in Kampung Tengah, Jalan Bakri, in Muar on Wednesday morning.

Muar District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz, said the incident occurred at approximately 9.43am and resulted in the destruction of the house, a car, and a motorcycle, with estimated losses between RM100,000 and RM150,000.

“Prior to the fire, the suspect had struck and slashed his 70-year-old father using a cane and knife, causing injuries. The victim is currently receiving treatment at Muar Hospital,” he said in a statement on Thursday.

He added that the unemployed suspect, who sustained minor injuries, tested positive for methamphetamine and is also suspected to be suffering from mental health issues.

The case is being investigated under Section 436 of the Penal Code for mischief by fire and Section 324 for voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon.

Raiz Mukhliz also urged the public to monitor family members closely to prevent drug abuse, which can lead to violent or tragic outcomes. - September 18, 2025
