AUTHORITIES have detained ten individuals, including a teenager, following a brawl involving plastic chairs during a religious event in Segamat that quickly spread on social media.

A minor is among ten suspects, aged between 14 and 56, arrested in connection with a fight at Padang Awam Li Chi, Kampung Abdullah, which went viral after a video showing the disturbance circulated online.

Deputy Segamat Police Chief, Deputy Superintendent Ng Swie Chat, said the incident occurred during a Hokkien movie screening and band performance held as part of the ‘bulan tujuh’ religious ceremony.

“The investigation found the incident took place at 11.58pm last Wednesday during the religious event at the public field,” he said in a statement.

“All suspects questioned admitted their involvement in the altercation,” Ng added.

Police have opened investigations under Sections 324 and 148 of the Penal Code for causing hurt and rioting respectively.

Several plastic chairs believed to have been used as weapons were also seized by authorities.

Following the incident, the Segamat District Office has revoked the permit for the movie screening and band performance for the religious event.

Ng urged the public with any information related to the case to contact the nearest police station or the Segamat District Police Headquarters at 07-9324222. - September 19, 2025
