THE invitation for former US President Donald Trump to participate in the 47th ASEAN Summit next month in Kuala Lumpur was extended not solely in Malaysia’s capacity, but as part of ASEAN’s chairmanship role, a government spokesperson has clarified.
Speaking to the media, Unity Government spokesperson Datuk Fahmi Fadzil emphasised that the invitation represents the collective interests of the ten ASEAN member states plus one, and presents a strategic platform for Malaysia to voice its position on pressing issues such as Palestine.
“The invitation is on behalf of the 10 plus one Asian countries, and this is a good opportunity for all Asian countries to engage not only with President Donald Trump but also with many other world leaders who have been invited,” he said.
Fahmi added that the summit would allow Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to speak frankly with the former US president. He noted Malaysia’s prior discussions with Jumur concerning the reconstruction of Gaza, indicating that the matter is expected to feature prominently in the Prime Minister’s agenda.
“More importantly for us at this time, when many countries have recognised the nationhood of Palestine, this is an opportune moment to not only reaffirm Malaysia’s stance but also express Malaysia’s intention to be involved in rebuilding Palestine,” he said during a press conference following his visit to the Sumud Nusantara Command Center (SNCC).
Earlier reports quoted Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stating that Malaysia will utilise the diplomatic platform to continue raising awareness on Gaza and Palestine. He stressed the importance of Malaysia’s diplomatic acumen in maintaining a firm yet strategic voice in defending justice.
“Although not a major power, Malaysia continues to command respect internationally due to its consistent stance in upholding justice and freedom of speech,” he remarked. - September 28, 2025
