A 32-year-old mechanic was charged in the Kuching Magistrates’ Court today for the alleged murder of a toddler in a house in Kampung Rampangi earlier this month.

A MECHANIC has been formally charged with the murder of a three-year-old girl at Kampung Rampangi, Santubong, in a case that has shocked the local community.

Mohammad Shukri Ryan, 32, appeared before Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali this morning, where the charge was read out to him.

He nodded to indicate understanding, but no plea was recorded, as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

The accused is alleged to have murdered Nurzahieyka Zainuddin at a residence in Kampung Rampangi, Jalan Sultan Tengah, at approximately 7.45 pm on 7 October.

He is charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the mandatory death penalty or, upon the court’s discretion, imprisonment for a term between 30 and 40 years and no fewer than 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction.

Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa fixed 21 November for mention of the case, pending the post-mortem report.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Chuah Kai Sheng led the prosecution. The accused was unrepresented. - October 16, 2025
