THE Malaysian Foreign Affairs Ministry has confirmed that, as of Tuesday, no Malaysians have been reported affected by the magnitude 7.5 earthquake that struck northeastern Japan on Monday evening.
The tremor, which occurred at 11:15 PM local time on December 8, had its epicentre approximately 80 kilometres off the coast of Aomori Prefecture at a depth of 54 kilometres. Although tsunami warnings were initially issued, they have since been lifted.
In a statement, Wisma Putra said the Embassy of Malaysia in Tokyo is maintaining close contact with local authorities and is “monitoring developments closely” in the aftermath of the earthquake.
The ministry advised Malaysians living in or travelling to the affected regions to remain vigilant, avoid coastal areas, and follow the guidance issued by Japanese authorities.
“Malaysians are also strongly encouraged to register their presence with the Embassy of Malaysia in Tokyo to ensure timely communication and assistance when required,” the advisory added.
