KLIA Terminal 1 to streamline outbound customs checks from tomorrow

CUSTOMS inspections for travellers departing Malaysia will be consolidated at the departure gates of Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 1 (KLIA T1) from Jan 1, under a new operational arrangement designed to improve passenger flow and reduce congestion.

At present, the Royal Malaysian Customs Department conducts checks using Departure Screening scanners in the departure zone after immigration clearance. Authorities have acknowledged that the current layout has the potential to cause bottlenecks, particularly during peak travel hours.

The Ministry of Transport (MOT) said on Tuesday that the new initiative will allow passengers to move more smoothly through the terminal before boarding their flights, thereby easing congestion and cutting waiting times in the departure area.

“This improvement is implemented through close cooperation between the Ministry of Transport, the Royal Malaysian Customs Department, Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd and the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency,” the ministry said in a statement.

“This step does not affect the level of security or customs enforcement. On the contrary, passenger and goods inspections will continue to be strengthened through operational coordination and compliance with jointly agreed procedures,” it added.

According to the ministry, the changes are expected to enhance the overall passenger experience, speed up the boarding process and ensure that KLIA T1 operates more efficiently, safely and in a more orderly manner, in line with international airport best practices.

“However, any attempt to take out items that violate the law will still be subject to strict action,” the statement said. - December 31, 2025
