POLICE are investigating to determine the motive behind the shooting incident in front of a car wash in the Nibong Tebal area that left a man dead on Friday night.

Penang Deputy Police Chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said that in the incident that occurred at about 10.40 pm, the victim was a local man in his 30s who was believed to have been shot several times in the body and legs by an unknown suspect.

According to him, initial investigations found that the incident involved two male suspects riding a motorcycle.

"One of the suspects is believed to have got off the motorcycle before approaching the victim and firing several shots from close range, while the other suspect was waiting on the motorcycle.

"Both suspects were reported to be wearing dark clothing and helmets and are suspected of using a semi-automatic firearm," he said in a statement.

He said the victim was later taken to Taiping Hospital for treatment, but was confirmed dead while receiving treatment.

According to Mohd Alwi, the case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, which provides for the death penalty or imprisonment for between 30 and 40 years and whipping, if convicted.

In the meantime, he asked for the cooperation of the public who have any information regarding the incident to contact the investigating officer of the case, Assistant Superintendent Mohd Hafzan Amrie Hashim at 012-8188389 to assist in the investigation. – January 17, 2026
