METEOROLOGICAL authorities have confirmed there is no tsunami threat to the country following a series of earthquakes in the region, including a magnitude 5.8 tremor in eastern Indonesia earlier on Friday.
In a statement, Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said the moderate earthquake struck West Papua at 6.51am local time.
"A moderate earthquake has occurred in West Papua, Indonesia at 6.51am on March 27, 2026.
"There is no tsunami threat to Malaysia," the agency said.
The quake was recorded at coordinates of 3.4 degrees south and 139.4 degrees east, at a depth of 56 kilometres.
Earlier, MetMalaysia also reported a stronger magnitude 6.4 earthquake off the east coast of Honshu, Japan, late Thursday night, which occurred at 10.18pm.
Despite its higher magnitude, the agency similarly confirmed that the tremor posed no tsunami risk to Malaysia.
The Japan quake was located at coordinates of 3.95 degrees north and 143.5 degrees east, with a depth of 63 kilometres, according to the agency’s data.
Authorities said the situation is being monitored, but stressed that both incidents do not pose any danger to Malaysian waters or coastal areas. - March 27, 2026
