PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed deep condolences over the death of former Iranian foreign minister Kamal Kharrazi, who headed Iran's Strategic Council on Foreign Relations, saying the loss underscores the urgent need to end the ongoing conflict.
In a Facebook post, Anwar said he was deeply saddened by the news of Kharrazi’s death, which he said followed injuries sustained in what he described as a Zionist terrorist attack.
“This war must end,” he said.
Anwar recalled his long-standing acquaintance with Kharrazi, noting that they had first met when the latter served as Iran’s representative to the United Nations in New York, and that their relationship continued during Kharrazi’s tenure as foreign minister.
“He is a knowledgeable and sincere person who is always thoughtful, humble and polite in his dealings with others,” he said.
The Prime Minister described Kharrazi’s passing as not only a loss to the international diplomatic community, but also a personal loss of a close friend.
He said the death of the veteran diplomat should serve as a stark reminder of the human cost of continued hostilities.
“This war must end,” he reiterated.
According to Iranian media reports, Kharrazi, who had been injured in airstrikes on April 1, died on Thursday as a result of his wounds. His wife was reportedly killed in an earlier attack on their residence in Tehran.
Kharrazi previously served as Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations before becoming foreign minister under reformist president Mohammad Khatami from 1997 to 2005.
He is among several senior Iranian political and military figures reported killed amid escalating conflict since late February, which has seen sustained hostilities involving Iran, Israel and the United States. - April 10, 2026
