PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today held a one-on-one meeting with his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese, with discussions centred on strengthening bilateral relations and addressing growing concerns over energy security amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
The meeting took place shortly after Albanese received an official welcome ceremony at the Perdana Putra Complex, marking the start of his three-day official visit to Malaysia from April 15 to 17.
Bernama reported that both leaders exchanged views on the escalating conflict in the Middle East and its spillover effects on global energy markets, particularly the risk of disruptions to supply chains and international trade routes that could undermine regional economic stability.
They also discussed avenues to deepen cooperation in energy security, including ensuring stable supply flows, enhancing infrastructure resilience and exploring opportunities in renewable energy and clean technology.
Following the one-on-one meeting, the leaders are expected to proceed with bilateral talks involving senior ministers and officials from both countries to review progress under the Malaysia-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership established in 2021.
Australia remains a key economic partner for Malaysia, ranking as its 12th largest trading partner in 2025, with total bilateral trade valued at RM78.63 billion (US$18.38 billion). Malaysian exports amounted to RM48.64 billion (US$11.37 billion), while imports stood at RM29.99 billion (US$7 billion).
Energy interdependence continues to underpin the relationship, with Australia supplying about 96 per cent of Malaysia’s liquefied natural gas imports, a critical component supporting Peninsular Malaysia’s gas network and the country’s National Energy Transition Roadmap.
In return, Malaysia is a major fuel supplier to Australia, accounting for approximately 17 per cent of its total fuel imports, reflecting a long-standing commercial energy supply chain rather than short-term arrangements.
Earlier, Albanese was accorded an official welcome at the Perdana Putra Complex upon his arrival at 9.56am, where he was received by Anwar.
The ceremony featured the playing of both national anthems and an inspection of the guard of honour comprising three officers and 103 personnel from the First Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment (Ceremonial), led by Major Muhammad Firdaus Mat Hayin.
Also present were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming.
Others in attendance included Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, foreign diplomats and senior government officials.
After the ceremony, Albanese signed the guest book before proceeding to the one-on-one meeting with Anwar, followed by the wider bilateral session.
The two leaders are also expected to witness the exchange of several Memoranda of Understanding covering areas of mutual interest, before holding a joint press conference to outline the outcomes of their discussions and reaffirm commitments to strengthening Malaysia-Australia ties.
