AMANAH vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad has urged leaders of parties within the ruling Unity Government to hold urgent discussions to prevent clashes in upcoming state elections in Melaka and Johor.
The Kuala Selangor MP said such coordination is crucial, noting that the coalition is widely seen as capable of securing strong victories if it avoids contesting against itself.
He added that the formation of the Unity Government following the 15th General Election in 2022 had helped stabilise the country’s political landscape.
Dzulkefly said political speculation has begun to intensify as several states approach the end of their legislative terms, including Melaka in December 2026, Sarawak in February 2027 and Johor in April 2027.
“Therefore, discussions on the form of cooperation between parties in facing the upcoming elections must be expedited to ensure clearer and more orderly preparations.
“Victory is expected to be on our side, and it is believed that no opposition can challenge the Unity Government in a one-to-one contest, unless there are other contest scenarios such as parties clashing with each other in the upcoming elections.
“Therefore, as part of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition, we are confident that with this unity in mind, we will remain and no one can challenge us,” he said.
He made the remarks during a Hari Raya gathering for the Sri Gading parliamentary constituency, hosted by its MP Aminolhuda Hassan, who is also Johor PH chairman.
Meanwhile, Aminolhuda said the Johor state election should be postponed in light of the ongoing geopolitical crisis in West Asia.
“The best thing is to avoid elections in the current unstable situation.
“The economy is still uncertain, with the government having to spend RM6 billion a month on diesel and petrol subsidies, compared with only RM700 million previously.
“Therefore, our view (Johor PH) is that it would be best to postpone the election until the economy and the country are stable,” he said.
Separately, Pontian MP Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Maslan was previously reported as saying he would bring a proposal to postpone the Melaka and Johor state elections to the UMNO Supreme Council meeting, citing geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
He said that, in his personal view, elections should not be held during periods of geopolitical uncertainty and economic hardship affecting the public.
Ahmad stressed that his suggestion was a personal opinion and not an official party position, adding that timing is a crucial factor in politics based on his experience in UMNO leadership roles. - April 18, 2026
