A MODERATE earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale was recorded in the North Maluku Sea, Indonesia, at 12.45pm today, according to Malaysia’s Meteorological Department.

In a statement, the department said the tremor occurred approximately 120km east of Bitung, Indonesia, at a shallow depth of 10km.

Despite the seismic activity, preliminary assessments indicated that there is no tsunami threat to Malaysia.

Authorities continue to monitor regional seismic conditions as part of standard procedures following offshore earthquakes in the Indonesian archipelago, which lies along one of the world’s most active tectonic zones. - April 24, 2026
