The High Court has ordered controversial blogger and influencer Wan Muhammad Azri Wan Deris, better known as Papagomo, to pay RM280,000 in damages and legal costs to former Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng and his son Clint Lim Way Chau after ruling that defamatory allegations published on Facebook had damaged their reputations.
Judge Roslan Mat Nor found in favour of the plaintiffs in a suit linked to allegations that Clint Lim Way Chau had allegedly been detained at Singapore’s Changi Airport in 2020 for carrying RM2 million in undeclared cash.
The court ordered Wan Muhammad Azri to pay RM200,000 in damages and RM30,000 in legal costs to Lim Guan Eng, while Clint Lim Way Chau was awarded RM80,000 in damages and RM10,000 in costs.
Lim Guan Eng and his son were represented by lawyer K Simon Murali, while the defendant was represented by Logen Iskander Abdullah.
The defamation suit was filed on April 19, 2020 after the plaintiffs alleged that Wan Muhammad Azri had uploaded defamatory statements on Facebook through an account operating under the name “Papa Azri”.
According to the statement of claim, the posting alleged that Clint Lim Way Chau had been detained at Singapore’s Changi Airport on Feb 29, 2020 for allegedly bringing RM2 million into the country without declaration.
The plaintiffs further claimed the posting accused Lim Guan Eng, who was finance minister at the time, of travelling to Singapore shortly after learning of his son’s supposed detention.
The controversial Facebook post reportedly surfaced following an earlier report by a Chinese-language newspaper in March 2020, which later retracted the report and issued a public apology.
In delivering judgment, the High Court concluded that the statements published by the defendant were defamatory towards both Lim Guan Eng and his son. - May 19, 2026
