A FAMILY of four from Terengganu was killed in a horrific five-vehicle collision near Simpang Renggam Prison on Monday afternoon, in one of the deadliest road accidents reported in Johor this year.

The crash, which occurred along Jalan Renggam–Simpang Renggam at approximately 1 pm, involved a Toyota Vios, Perodua Alza, Proton Wira, Mercedes-Benz and BMW.

All four fatalities were travelling in the Toyota Vios and were pronounced dead at the scene. The victims were identified as Semek Mat Soh, 73, Aiman Mohd Rashid, 36, Nor Azlina Abd Latip, 33, and Nur Airish Syifa Sidek, 10.

The deceased are understood to have been residents of Taman Setia in Bandar Al-Muktafi Billah Shah, Dungun, Terengganu.

The severity of the collision was underscored by the fact that one of the victims was thrown from the vehicle and landed on the roof of a Mercedes-Benz involved in the crash.

Renggam Fire and Rescue Station operations commander Ismail Mamat said emergency services were alerted shortly after the accident occurred.

“We received an emergency call at 1.16 pm before deploying five personnel to the scene.

“Upon arrival, we found that the accident involved five vehicles,” he said in a statement.

Two people sustained injuries in the collision. They were identified as Perodua Alza driver Husnizam Hisamudin, 38, and the driver of the BMW, whose identity had yet to be confirmed at the time of reporting.

Meanwhile, five others escaped without serious injury.

The uninjured included Proton Wira driver Muhammad Amirul Hazim Misnon, 22, as well as four occupants of the Mercedes-Benz — Mohd Azhar Ahmad, 63, his son Muhammad Hariz Mohd Azhar, 23, Rahimar A. Rahman, 57, and a female passenger whose identity had not yet been established.

Firefighters and emergency personnel secured the scene and assisted in recovery operations, while police commenced investigations into the cause of the crash.

Authorities have yet to determine the sequence of events that led to the collision. Further investigations are ongoing. - June 1, 2026
