POLICE are actively searching for an unidentified individual dressed in dark religious attire who was recorded on closed-circuit television (CCTV) climbing over a residential fence and stealing clothes from a drying line at a terrace house in Taman Cheras Indah.

Ampang Jaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner Khairul Anuar Khalid said authorities became aware of the incident after a video of the act went viral on social media at about 5 pm yesterday.

He confirmed that a police report was subsequently lodged by a 31-year-old woman on the same day after she discovered that clothing left to dry outside her home had gone missing.

“The complainant stated that the incident was noticed at about 10 am while she was at home. A review of CCTV footage showed an individual wearing a dark-coloured robe climbing over the fence before entering the compound of the house.

“He then took clothes belonging to the complainant. Checks revealed that only the clothes hung outside were missing and no other items were reported stolen. Further investigations are ongoing, and the suspect involved is still being traced,” he said in a statement.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect targeted only the clothing placed outside the residence, with no signs of forced entry or additional theft reported at the scene.

The case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft and Section 447 for criminal trespass.

Images circulating on social media show the suspect dressed in a black robe and appearing to wear a face covering resembling a niqab, further fuelling public interest in the case as police continue efforts to identify and locate the individual. - June 6, 2026
