THE Federal Government has approved RM9.46 million to implement 52 Cakna MADANI projects across Sarawak in 2026, reinforcing its commitment to improving flood resilience through fast-track infrastructure projects designed to deliver immediate benefits to local communities.
The allocation, provided under Rolling Plan 1 (RP1) of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), will fund a series of low-hanging fruit initiatives aimed at reducing flood risks and protecting public infrastructure throughout the state.
The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) said 12 of the approved projects have already been completed, 13 are currently under construction, while the remaining 27 are in the pre-implementation stage.
Deputy Prime Minister II and Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof on Saturday inspected one of the projects involving riverbank stabilisation works at the Tanah Perkuburan Tab Cinaq cemetery in Miri.
The RM134,682 project commenced in May 2026 and is scheduled for completion in November this year.
Its primary component is the construction of a 50-metre gabion wall to strengthen the riverbank, reduce erosion and safeguard nearby infrastructure and the cemetery from the risk of riverbank collapse.
During the visit, Fadillah also received a briefing on the progress of the Miri River Flood Mitigation Project, part of the wider Miri River Basin flood management programme.
The RM31 million project began physical construction in October 2023 and has reached 58.11 per cent completion. It is expected to be fully completed by November 2026.
The project includes consultancy services, preliminary works, utility relocation and the construction of major flood mitigation infrastructure, including tidal walls, retention ponds, upgraded drainage systems, a pumping station, flood control gates, rubbish trap systems, mechanical and electrical installations, as well as overall project management.
PETRA said the Miri project forms part of a much larger federal flood mitigation programme in Sarawak.
Overall, the Federal Government has approved 29 flood mitigation projects across the state with a combined allocation of RM3.834 billion.
The ministry said the government remains committed to strengthening Malaysia's resilience against flooding through high-impact infrastructure projects that directly benefit communities, in line with the Malaysia MADANI agenda of sustainability, public well-being and effective service delivery. - July 4, 2026
