SABAH recorded a 4.1 per cent growth in visitor arrivals during the first eight months of this year compared to the corresponding period in 2025, according to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
As of August 2026, the state registered 2.6 million arrivals, comprising 1.1 million international visitors (43 per cent) and 1.5 million domestic travellers (57 per cent).
In a speech delivered by Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai at the Gala Night and Rhythms of Kinabalu 2026 on Saturday, Hajiji affirmed that the figures demonstrate Sabah’s enduring appeal across domestic and global markets.
China maintained its position as Sabah’s leading international source market, accounting for 578,681 arrivals from January to August. Positive growth was also recorded from Singapore, Australia, Europe, and Japan following a favourable review of Japan’s travel advisory, with rising August arrivals from Italy and Spain further underscoring European interest.
Hajiji expressed confidence that Sabah remains on track to achieve its overarching target of four million visitor arrivals for 2026, having attained roughly 64 per cent of the goal. To reach the benchmark, the state requires an additional 1.44 million arrivals between September and December, averaging approximately 361,000 visitors per month.
The Chief Minister noted that while domestic arrivals grew by 2.1 per cent, persistent challenges surrounding airfares and flight availability must be addressed to protect the state’s regional competitiveness.
He stated that air connectivity must continue to be given close attention so that the full potential of Sabah’s tourism sector can be realised.
Highlighting the role of cultural tourism, Hajiji praised the 12th edition of the Rhythms of Kinabalu showcase for empowering local artists and preserving traditional Bornean music, noting that cultural heritage remains a cornerstone for local economic growth and sustainable tourism. - October 4, 2026
