MIRI – In an effort to curb the Covid-19 surge, the Sarawak government has frozen the entry of all workers from China with immediate effect.
This measure was decided on this morning by the state Disaster Management Committee to try to halt further spread of the Covid-19 in Sarawak, said committee chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
“This morning, we had an urgent meeting to discuss additional measures that we must take in our efforts to halt the spread of this virus.
“We are drawing up a comprehensive plan to tighten security at all our borders' entry points. We will freeze entry of all China workers with immediate effect.
“We will have a more detailed entry form for people coming into the state, including Sarawakians working and living elsewhere,” he said.
The committee held an urgent meeting with the state Health Department and other relevant government agencies this morning to discuss the matter.
He said state authorities have enhanced cooperation with the federal Health Ministry to combat the infection resurgence.
“The pandemic is spreading very fast throughout Sarawak and we do not have any vaccine yet, so there is an urgent need to enhance our security measures.
“The public must help us and play their part, too, if we want to see a halt in the number of infections.”
Anyone having a cough or sore throat must go for Covid-19 tests without delay, he added.
So far, Sarawak has a death toll of 33 and almost 3,000 cumulative Covid-19 cases. – The Vibes, January 27, 2021
