KUALA LUMPUR – Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali has labelled parents who refuse to have their children vaccinated as “selfish”.

Dr Siti Hasmah, who is the wife of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, said this is because the parents themselves had been vaccinated when they were young, which has allowed them to grow up healthy and have children.

“They (the parents) are selfish because their fathers and mothers gave them immunisation, which has enabled them to grow up healthy, and be able to get married and have their own children.

“So, why should we prevent our own offspring from being vaccinated when they are small?”

Dr Siti Hasmah, who graduated as a medical doctor from University of Malaya in 1955, said this in a brief video posted on Twitter by user Malek Ridzuan, who uses the handle @maliqueredzuan.

She urged parents not to neglect the health of their children, saying that they must prepare for the Covid-19 immunisation programme that will kick off soon.

She also questioned the rationale behind parents preventing their children from getting immunisation against illnesses, such as diphtheria, polio and measles.

“Parents who are anti-vaccination for their children are only protecting their own interests.” – The Vibes, January 27, 2021
