SANDAKAN – Four secondary schools in Sandakan have been closed for sanitisation after some of its students tested positive for Covid-19 over the last two days.

Sekolah Menengah (SM) St Mary with 200 SPM candidates was ordered closed yesterday, while Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Batu Sapi, SMK Elopura Bestari, and SMK Perempuan were ordered to close indefinitely from today.

Neither the Health Ministry nor the Education Ministry have released any official reports but sources from the schools said that the positive cases were detected among students, except for SM St Mary, of which it is suspected a teacher with symptoms tested positive.

The sources also revealed that close contacts of the positive cases have been told to take a swab test immediately.

The teachers and students in question did not go through screenings before school reopened on January 20, as only students living in hostels were required to undergo the Covid-19 test.

The closure of the schools have left over 1,000 students in Sandakan unable to attend physical classes which would enable them to get ready for the SPM examination, which is only 26 days away.

On Monday, Sabah’s Covid-19 official spokesperson Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said that 58 SPM/STPM students in Sabah have tested positive for Covid-19 up to Sunday January 24.
