GEORGE TOWN – Despite protests from certain quarters, the state government has every reason to continue with mega projects under the RM46 billion Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP) so as to spur the pandemic-hit economy.
State Infrastructure and Transport Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari told The Vibes that the provision of medical care, social aid and economic upliftment is equally important in addressing the Covid-19 crisis.
“As a responsible state government, we have to ensure that our economy survives as much as our citizens.
“Adverse economic repercussions, such as unemployment, business closures and market capital deficiencies, have to be addressed.”
He was responding to state Gerakan chairman Oh Tong Keong’s suggestion that projects under PTMP be suspended until the pandemic ends.
Zairil said the party does not understand the dynamics of revitalising the state economy, and is taking a short-sighted view without realising that its predecessors actively pushed for mega projects.
“Besides the creation of new jobs, these projects will also inject domestic direct investment into the local economy and serve as a catalyst for future growth and foreign investment.”
He said the state administration has formed the Penang Socio-Economic Recovery Consultative Council (PSERCC), comprising representatives from both the government and industry, to oversee efforts towards recovery in various sectors.
Among the key recovery drivers identified by PSERCC is the implementation of PTMP, including the Penang South Reclamation project.
Instead of slamming the DAP-led state government, said Zairil, Gerakan, as the newest member of the ruling Perikatan Nasional, should appeal to Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to reinstate funding for some PTMP projects, as this will help Penangites. – The Vibes, February 17, 2021
