KUALA LUMPUR – Fans of Kg Baru’s bubur lambuk, or savoury porridge, will be able to enjoy the delicious dish when the annual tradition of serving the treat dating back more than 100 years resumes this Ramadan.
There was a break in the programme of distributing bubur lambuk by Kg Baru Jamek Mosque last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions.
Mosque chairman Datuk Mohd Khay Ibrahim said the National Security Council (NSC) has approved the programme of preparing, cooking and distributing bubur lambuk for the public this year.
“This time, we will distribute it based on the (advice) of the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department (Jawi), which is still not allowing the breaking of fast at the mosque,” he said.
He said this year, the mosque will spend more than RM200,000 in donations to provide the tasty treat.
“We will cook a minimum of 15 pots daily during Ramadan, which will be carried out in the community spirit involving about 30 mosque congregants.
“Usually, from one pot of porridge, we can make up to 190 packets of bubur lambuk using 15kg of rice, 6kg of beef, 6kg of santan (coconut milk), 1kg of dried prawns as well as a mixture of spices,” he said.
Khay said there is no secret to the dish’s preparation.
“We have been using a recipe passed down over generations and we do not use any secret ingredients, neither do we add or reduce the spices. Maybe it is the blessing of alms from the people that makes it so delicious.”
Khay added he is confident the community will comply with the standard operating procedures (SOPs) during the distribution of the bubur lambuk.
“We do not see the SOPs as a burden as it has been practised by the community over the past year.
“Apart from queuing in the mosque compound, maybe we will use a drive-through approach, depending on the situation.” – Bernama, April 10, 2021
