KOTA KINABALU – A large number of people have been spotted buying food around town here despite the state government banning Ramadan bazaars to stop the spread of Covid-19.
Huge crowds, apparently purchasing food to break fast, have been sighted at the open eateries in Asia City Complex and under the flyover next to Segama Complex.
Since Sabah enforced the recovery movement control order last month, eateries have been allowed to accept dine-in customers.
The stream of shoppers has sparked concern among local folk of the possibility of fresh Covid-19 infections due to the lack of social distancing.
In the past week, Sabah has recorded over 100 Covid-19 cases daily, owing to the discovery of new clusters, especially in Tawau, Lahad Datu and Kota Kinabalu.
A movement control order will be enforced in Sandakan from April 17 to 30 after 46 new coronavirus cases were recorded in the district today.
A lockdown will be imposed once an area or locality records more than 40 infections.
Yesterday, a new cluster – Khidmat, involving students from an Islamic school – was discovered near Bukit Padang, here, after two students tested positive during symptomatic screening on April 12.
A total of 544 out of 796 students are still awaiting the results of their swab tests.
Kota Kinabalu City Hall, when contacted over the mass crowd issue in the two locations, could not be reached for comment. – The Vibes, April 16, 2021
